What Happened to April?!?

Wow! Looks like I really got off track. What can I say? Life around here is super busy. I'll get back to telling the story of how I got to be Mommy again at at time when I truly thought I was going to just be Gramma.

For now, we are just in a whirlwind of activity. Getting finished up with preschool and looking forward to kindergarten. Such mixed emotions! I am so ready to have my little one in school some days, but I can't help but be a little wistful when I realize that the preschool years are almost gone.

My job now is to make our summer together something special to remember.

Did I mention that I had plans? Not plans, really, but PLANS. I knew what I wanted from life and I knew how I was going to get it. We thoroughly prepared for my exit from the working world. We had a budget, knew what we could and couldn't do, and were very comfortable with how we had orchestrated everything. Well...

Traveling with my husband had seemed like a great idea. I did go on a few trips with him, but there were always so many things to do at home. He was beginning to get tired of traveling and we both wanted to spend more time with our grandson. My husband got an opportunity to take a different job within the same company. This job did not require travel and we both decided it was the right thing to do. So, some of the details had changed, but we were still doing what we wanted to do. We were happy. He was home. We were going to get to spend more time with the grandbaby. We were going to do some remodeling on our home. And that's when we got the surprise of our lives.

Looking back now, I really should not have been surprised. We knew from the beginning there was a strong possiblity that we would have a little more responsibility for our grandchild than the typical grandparent. Knowing this, we were thankful that we had the freedom to provide care for him on an as needed basis. I suppose that the unexpected part was that we would have to care for him full time.

There is nothing to be gained by going into the details of how we came to be parents rather than grandparents. The fact is that we did. His parents were no longer able to care for him and someone had to step in. He could have been placed into foster care, but that was unthinkable as far as we were concerned. We had less than two hours to decide if we could take on the job of raising a 2 year old. We thought we knew what we were getting into, but truly, we had no idea.
You would think that after parenting 2 biological daughters, along with a son and a daughter who came as a bonus with my second husband, I would have this mommy thing down pat. WRONG! Every child is a brand new adventure. Especially when that child is a surprise.

Our little one is our grandson. He came to live with us at the age of 2 and has been with us for a little over 3 years. We thought we had our life all planned. Ha!

Our grandson was born in late 2005. I quit my job the following spring. My husband's job required frequent travel, so I was going to travel with him, spend time with the new grandbaby and redecorate my house. Those were the plans we made. God had something else in store.

My hope for this blog is that it will encourage and perhaps inform others who find themselves in similar circumstances. If I have learned anything in the last three years, it is that I don't have complete control over anything in my life, and that includes this blog. So, join me on my journey through somewhat uncharted territory. If nothing else, it will be interesting!
